Korogocho is a part of the biggest slum areas in Nairobi. It´s located in Kasarani Division, in east of Nairobi, approximatly 11 km from the Central Busness District. It has more or less 400.000 people on 1 km square of land. It borders the largest dumping site in Nairobi – the Dandora dumping site – posing environmental health and security risk for the residents and surrounding settlements.
Like any other slum settlements in Nairobi, it has a large poor population with no access to minimum services, living largely in structures made out of temporary and recycled building materials – or made out of timber, mud walling, and roofing made of substandard materials such as sacks, carton, paper and polythene. There is no proper sanitation and waste
management. Water reticulation is limited and the road network is inadequate.
Many children in Korogocho don´t have access to primary education. Open spaces are few thus limiting recreation and other forms of leisure opportunities for the people. To survive a big number of them are forced to comb through dumping site to collect plastic bags and peaces of metall to exchange them to food, water and a peace of soap.
Korogocho has a history of presence of Faith Based Organizations (FBO) and enjoys the benefits of good relations between the Christians, Muslims and many other African churches.
